All Natural, Rejuvenating Face Mask!

As some of our readers may know I recently got married! After all of the wedding related stress I was certainly ready to pamper myself! There is no better way to pamper yourself than this quick, easy, all-natural face mask that has only four ingredients!

  • 1 tablespoon of oatmeal, ground in a food processor
  • 1 tablespoon of organic, unflavored yogurt
  • ½ teaspoon of honey
  • ½ teaspoon of jojoba oil

Place all ingredients inside of a plastic bottle with a lid, Whole Foods sells plain bottles for around 10 cents a bottle. Shake well, then hold the bottle under warm water for a few seconds to heat the mixture.

Apply the mask, leave on for 10 minutes, then wash face well with warm water.

I hope you enjoy this all-natural and very refreshing face mask!

Grow a Summer Herb Garden

An easy thing I like to do year-round that slims down my waist and grocery bill, is plant a seasonal herb garden. It is so simple and takes up such little space that I can even manage it on my apartment balcony! A few herbs I like to grow in the summer are Basil, Parsley, Oregano, and Rosemary. Here are a few tips on how to make sure your herb garden is successful!

  • Give plants plenty of room, you can usually get an idea of how much space they need by reading the seed packets.
  • Water plants regularly and select pots with good drainage.
  • Turn pots frequently to ensure that they get plenty of sunlight on all sides.
  • For an organic, all-natural pesticide for herbs, puree 2 white onions, 1 jalapeno, and a clove garlic and place the mixture in boiling water for 30 minutes. Strain out the vegetables and place the liquid in a spray bottle to apply to the herbs.

Recipe for Herb Butter

  • 1 stick of unsalted butter, cut into pieces and softened to room temperature.
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cups of assorted fresh herb leaves from your new herb garden (Tarragon, Thyme, Parsley, Basil, Dill, Chives, Marjoram, Oregano or Rosemary)

In a food processor combine butter, salt, and pepper. Process until you get a creamy paste, scraping down the sides as necessary, then add lemon juice and process until creamy, finally add herb leaves and process until well blended. Then shape into one small log on wax paper, roll tightly, wrap it and plastic wrap and chill or freeze for up to three months.

Cool Summer Gazpacho!

For those of our readers here in Houston I’m sure you’ve noticed it’s getting hot in a hurry as the summer months approach. Cool down with this delicious, healthy and yeast-free gazpacho! It also makes a great appetizer for summer parties: just serve in a shot glass and garnish with a cherry tomato or even a boiled shrimp!

  • 4 cups of tomato juice
  • 1 red onion, minced
  • 1 yellow, green or orange bell pepper, minced
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 2 cups of chopped tomatoes
  • 1 clove of minced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of basil
  • 1 teaspoon of parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon Stevia
  • Salt and pepper to taste

In a blender (I use a Vita-Mix) combine tomato juice, onions, bell pepper, cucumber, tomatoes, garlic, lemon juice, vinegar, basil, parsley, Stevia, salt and pepper. Blend until well combined but still chunky. Chill for 2-3 hours, then garnish with fresh parsley, cherry tomatoes, or boiled shrimp if desired, then serve!
